NWA Trivia Week | Straight Outta Compton (Part 2)
Posted: Aug 05 2015
This week, LAYOP Clothing Company will be honoring one of the most dangerous groups in American music history, NWA. On Friday, August 14th, the Straight Outta Compton movie hits the big screen as it showcases the rise and fall of the legendary Gangsta Rap group.
Before NWA, west coast rap only had a few major players in the game: Ice-T and Too Short. Hip-Hop culture was heavily dominated by East Coast rappers in the early stages of rap music in the 1980s. The message and delivery was predominately pro-black and care-free: then a coastal shift took place.
NWA popped on the rap scene like the Fab Five at Michigan - they were trailblazers, pioneers and visionaries. From the raw poetic lyrics spoken by Ice Cube and MC Ren to the undeniable style and swagger by Eazy-E, NWA was the perfect group under the musical direction of Dr. Dre and DJ Yella.
Their debut album, Straight Outta Compton, took the country by storm. Despite the U.S. Government's attempt to censor them, Straight Outta Compton was a huge success, selling over two million copies.
